How to Regrip Your Golf Clubs

Regripping a golf club is simpler than it looks. Work through one club at a time, don’t rush the cutting step, and have everything within reach before you start.

Before you start

You’ll need:

  • Your Regrip DIY Golf Gripping Kit
  • Your new grip
  • A clean rag or old towel
  • A small tray, towel or scrap cardboard to catch excess grip solution

Safety first: take care whenever using the hook blade. Cut away from yourself, keep your free hand clear of the blade path, and take extra care around graphite shafts.

One club at a time.

Secure the club

Place the club securely in the Regrip clamp with the grip end easy to reach. The club should be stable enough that you can work without holding the shaft in your other hand.

Remove the old grip

Use the hook blade to carefully cut along the old grip. Once split, peel the grip away from the shaft and remove it completely.

Take your time here. The goal is to cut the grip, not the shaft underneath it.

Remove the old tape

Peel away the existing grip tape so you have a clean, smooth surface. Remove any loose adhesive or bumps before applying the new tape.

If the old tape is perfectly smooth and intact it can technically be retained as build-up, but for your first regrip we recommend starting clean.

Apply the new tape

Take one pre-cut Brampton grip tape strip and apply it lengthways along the shaft where the new grip will sit.

Leave roughly 6 mm (¼ inch) extending beyond the end of the shaft, then fold that excess into the shaft opening. Smooth the tape down firmly with no wrinkles.

Wet the tape and grip

Shake the HF-100 bottle before use.

Spray enough HF-100 to wet the full length of the exposed grip tape. Then add another one or two sprays inside the new grip. Cover the small hole in the grip cap with your finger, move the solution around inside, then pour the excess from the grip over the taped shaft.

Everything should be wet and slippery before you start the next step.

Slide the grip on

Start the mouth of the grip over the end of the shaft and push it on in one smooth, committed movement until the shaft is fully seated inside the grip.

Don’t stop halfway if you can avoid it. Once the grip starts sliding, keep it moving.

Align it

While the grip can still move, rotate it until the logo, markings or alignment features are exactly where you want them relative to the club face.

Check the grip is fully seated, straight and not stretched. Wipe away any excess solution with your towel.

Let it set

Put the club somewhere safe and leave the grip undisturbed for at least 20 minutes before hitting balls.

Using more solution than necessary can increase the set-up time, so if the grip still feels as though it can move, give it longer.

Common questions

My grip stopped halfway. What do I do?

Don’t panic and don’t keep twisting it aggressively. The tape has usually started grabbing because there wasn’t enough solution or the install paused for too long. If you can’t move it safely, stop and contact us before damaging the grip or shaft.

How much HF-100 should I use?

Enough to completely wet the tape, plus one or two sprays inside the grip. More isn’t necessarily better — excess solution can increase drying time.

Can I reuse the old tape?

Only when it remains completely smooth and intact. For the cleanest, most repeatable result, remove the old tape and use a fresh strip.

How do I know the grip is on properly?

It should be fully seated, straight, aligned to your preference and unable to move once the solution has set.

One club down.

That’s it. Once you’ve done the first one, the rest get much faster.

Remove. Tape. Slide. Fresh.
