Jumbo golf grips: who are they actually for?

Three plain black golf grips on steel shafts, from slim to very thick, on a dark workbench beside a blue cloth and a steel calliper

Your hands are big, or sore, and a standard grip feels like holding a pencil. Someone says try jumbo grips. Then you find out "jumbo" can mean almost anything.

Jumbo grips are for golfers with big hands, golfers whose joints complain, and golfers who strangle the club. Golf Pride puts the jumbo cutoff at a hand longer than 9 inches, measured from your wrist crease to the tip of your middle finger.

How big "jumbo" actually is depends on whose box you're holding.

Jumbo means whatever the label says

Golf Pride sizes its grips by hand length and glove size. Its size guide doesn't give an inch figure for jumbo at all.

JumboMax does publish numbers, and its own FAQ says most other brands' "jumbo" is about +1/16 of an inch over standard. JumboMax calls that size Standard Oversize, then keeps going all the way to +3/8.

So one brand's jumbo is another brand's warm-up lap. Great system, everyone.

JumboMax size Bigger than standard by Glove sizes it suits
Standard Oversize +1/16" Small or Medium Cadet
Standard Jumbo +1/8" Small or Medium Cadet
X-Small +3/16" Small or Medium Cadet, Medium
Small +1/4" Medium, Medium-Large
Medium +5/16" Medium-Large, Large, X-Large
Large +11/32" X-Large, XX-Large
X-Large +3/8" XX-Large, XXX-Large

Who should size up

Big hands. Golf Pride points men's XL, XXL and XXXL gloves at jumbo. If your fingertips dig into your palm on a standard grip, you've outgrown it.

Sore hands. For arthritis or joint pain, Golf Pride suggests sizing up, as long as you can still hold the club with confidence. JumboMax says golfers with arthritis or other gripping issues can benefit from its Large or XL.

Death-grippers. JumboMax reckons the extra surface lets you hold on with lighter pressure. That claim comes from their own testing, so try a few before you redo the whole bag.

Watch the weight

A fatter grip can carry more rubber. JumboMax says its Tour Series is heavier than most skinny grips, and its own fitting example drops a driver from D4 to D1 swingweight with one. Its UltraLite is about the same weight as a skinny grip, or a little lighter.

If swingweight means something to you, the grip weight and swingweight read covers what changes.

What to do now

Measure your hand. Check your glove size against the table. Still unsure, the golf grip size chart runs through every size.

Want to go properly big? The JumboMax UltraLite Blackout keeps the weight down. Want a gentler step up? Golf Pride Tour Velvet comes in Jumbo. Sitting between two sizes, Golf Pride suggests 2 to 4 extra wraps of tape to nudge a grip up slightly.

Big hands, big grip. Measure first, then buy.
